I visited the site in a boat a few years ago, when we had enough staff that I could take the day to do things like that!
http://ooa.unh.edu/

Re: UNH/UMass floating wind turbine gets stimulus money

UNH's expertise in this area is not to be minimized. I once attended a talk at NH's Seacoast Science Center by one of UNH's marine research center profs (sorry, can't remember the name) about a fish-farming project they were doing.

The "farms" were really giant deep-water ocean holding pens that were anchored out near the Isles of Shoals. There were several technical issues since the fish inside needed to be fed regularly and the pens also had to be able to go days without humans re-stocking them. They had to have self-powered fish-feeders, various environmental sensors, as well as a cellular communications system for remote monitoring.

But the thing that really caught me eye was the design spec for the pen's anchor system. It needed to survive the 50 foot waves that can occur during our Nor'Easters. I'm sure the expertise they got from this project will come in handy for designing floating turbines.
