Some faster DSL, and Comcast fights FCC

Started by nashuatelegraph · 10 months ago

Brilliantly written story (ahem) in the Telegraph today about FairPoint rolling out 7 mbps DSL in some areas, as a sort of place-holder as they work on an IP network that the company says will allow copper-line DSL downloads of up to 25 mbps in much of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

  • Nice to see FariPoint is being aggressive rolling out higher speed DSL.

They seem to be less strict about distance then Verzion was. I've had 1500/384 for years and am too far for 3000/768. When I called in July about renewing annual contract said I was grandfathered at old rate. I then asked about speed increase. Was told I was too far but system allowed rep to request higher speed. Had it for a while now and connection has been stable. Nice getting twice the speed for the same price.

  • What is going to be the fate of Fios here? My neighborhood in Hudson was wired for Fios over a year ago and Verizon made a big deal of it. Recently we had a couple of people move into the neighborhood and when they hooked up with Fairpoint for internet access they were given DSL service and were never told FIOS was available. This indicates to me Fairpoint has the intention of letting the Fios system just fade away. Also when the new neighbors were connected to the DSL system it was much cheaper than my Fios hookup.
  • But your FiOS - sorry, FAST is FairPoint's label - is much faster than their DSL, right?
  • That is my point. FAST or Fios is faster than DSL. My question is why fail to tell new customers that its available and just go ahead and connect them to DSL when the fiber optic cable goes right by their house. It doesn't give me a warm feeling about the future of "FAST" in NH.
